Filled with All the Fulness of God
“And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge,
that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” (Ephesians 3:19)
Knowledge and love. I often wonder which is more difficult
for man to handle; that there are certain things of God above and beyond his comprehension,
or of a love so pure and great that it can not be measured or weighed, to know
that we can not fully comprehend the depth, breadth or width of that love.
“Though the love of Christ may be better perceived and known
by Christians than it generally is, yet it cannot be fully understood on this
side heaven.” (Matthew Henry)
It is due to the love of Christ which enables us to be “filled
with all the fulness of God.” But let’s explore this further.
“…filled with all the fulness of God.” This is more than
just being filled with God, but being filled with all that God has to bestow.
It is God fulfilling His covenant with man. God’s fullness includes love, joy,
peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, godliness,
righteousness and truth. And “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty”
(2 Corinthians 3:17). And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is no sin.
“And as what God fills, neither sin nor Satan can fill;
consequently, it implies that the soul shall be emptied of sin, that sin shall
neither have dominion over it, nor a being in it.” (Adam Clarke)
No sin, no misery.
No sin, no misery.
To know Christ is one thing. Anyone can know Christ,
including the devil. But to know the love of Christ and have an experimental
knowledge of his presence, power, agency and riches is quite another.
