The Toppling Pinnacle
Augustine referred to man’s government as the, “toppling
pinnacle of earthly rule”. Think about it. Regardless of the heights achieved
and powers gained, man’s government will always be temporal. It’s existence,
nature and stature is in a constant state of flux. As the earth goes, so shall
the earthly governments.
“The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his
voice, the earth melted” (Psalm 46:6).
“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first
heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I
John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven,
prepared as a bride adorned for her husband” (Revelation 21:1-2).
There is only one eternal, perpetual government. It is from everlasting to everlasting, immutable, righteous and just.
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and
the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called
Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of
Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon
the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it
with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the
Lord of hosts will perform this” (Isaiah 9:6-7).
